New ARC Training Centre for CI Peter Lee

We are very pleased to congratulate Professor Peter Lee and colleagues including A/Professor Andrea O’Connor, both CIs on the ARC CPTT, who have been successful in their bid for a Training Centre for Medical Implant Technologies.

The ARC Training Centre for Medical Implant Technologies aims to train a new generation of interdisciplinary engineers and to transform the orthopaedic and maxillofacial implant industry in Australia. In collaboration with industry, universities and hospitals, the Centre will build a dynamic training environment for interdisciplinary engineers to develop and evaluate personalised implants and surgeries. It will create new networks, international collaborations and a generation of industry-ready researchers critical for growing Australia’s industry. The advances in materials and savings in time for procedures will reduce costs.

Media Release – New Partnership to Accelerate Therapeutic Technology

Today the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute’s (AMSI) put out a media release regarding our partnership with them through their APR.Intern program.

Enhancing APR.Intern’s focus on accelerating women into STEM, the collaboration will increase PhD industry engagement through placement of 24 of the Centre’s skilled PhDs in short-term research projects over four years.

AMSI Director Professor Geoff Prince said the partnership would open exciting opportunities to address gender equity while equipping a new generation of medical research leaders.

“These projects will have transformative impacts for health innovation, while training PhDs with essential skills to drive commercial medical research and development,” he said.

With over 500 Australian MedTech companies already in operation and skill demand growing, the ARC CPTT aims to foster supply of PhDs with both the research and industry skills to drive product research and development, and oversee regulatory affairs which are required for future growth of the sector.

ARC Centre for Personalised Therapeutics Technologies Director, Professor Alastair Stewart said facilitation of PhD industry engagement opportunities was central to meeting this challenge in Australia.

“A core mission for our Centre and APR.Intern, this partnership opens critical avenues to provide PhDs with essential experiential industry training helping to future proof the biomedical workforce,” says Professor Stewart.

PhD Opportunities with the ARC Centre for Personalised Therapeutics Technologies

We are currently seeking outstanding applicants for multiple PhD scholarship opportunities associated with ARC Centre for Personalised Therapeutics Technologies in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at The University of Melbourne.

The ARC Industry Transformation Training Centre is a 5-year National/International collaboration with nodes at Monash University and University of Western Australia. The Centre has 15 Industry based partners, is strongly aligned to the goals of industry growth sector body, MTPConnect, and collaborates with Accelerate Australia in experiential entrepreneurship training and mentorship.

The Centre aims to develop breakthrough enabling technology for new industrial applications of organ-on-a-chip technology, including the use of 3D bioprinting technologies across three themes: PhD students will research the use and development of microfluidics environments; real-time cell/organoid assay technologies, and/or bioprinting to generate novel tools for lead qualification in therapeutic discovery. The selected PhD candidates will be co-supervised by Industry and University based supervisors (Prof Alastair Stewart / A/Prof Alice Pebay) and will participate in an entrepreneurship-focussed training programme running in parallel to the PhD research. This programme will cover intellectual property, project management, regulatory environments, innovation, funding models and will include access to highly qualified industry-based mentors.

A tax-free scholarship of AU$31,828 is available to successful candidates for 3 years, with potential for a single extension of 6-months. It is a condition of the scholarship that the successful applicant completes a minimum of 12-month placement with an ARC CPTT industry partner during and as part of their candidature.  Selected applicants may be eligible and encouraged to apply for alternative competitive scholarships.

Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for enrolment in Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), including the required level of English language proficiency.  In addition, a high level of interpersonal skill level is required for this demanding and highly privileged opportunity.

Expressions of interest are invited from applicants with an appropriate background, until the end of 2018 (or until filled).

Selection Criteria

  • Academic merit and CV;
  • Area of study and research proposal;
  • Academic referee reports;
  • Interest in and/or experience working with industry partners;
  • Evidence of well-developed interpersonal and written communication skills.

Training Opportunity – MedTech Actuator

The Medtech Actuator is offering training programs that are designed for aspiring entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in medtech commercialisation and to receive the necessary skills and knowledge to kickstart their commercialisation journey.

The Medtech Actuator is looking to run a class in August.  Tailored Masterclasses are for a group of ~20 individuals.

Special Meeting – SCDMDD 2018

Stem Cells in Disease Modelling and Drug Discovery (SCDMDD) is a satellite meeting being held in Melbourne June 17-18 ahead of the International Society for Stem Cell Research annual conference 2018.

Our Centre’s Senior ECR Mentor, Associate Professor Alice Pebay will be speaking at this specialised meeting alongside various high profile national and international speakers including LORENZ STUDER from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

New Publication – Australasian Biotechnology


Associate Professor Kevin Pfleger, our Deputy Director Entrepreneurship & UWA Node Leader, has published an article in the April Edition of Australasian Biotechnology, AusBiotech‘s official journal, reporting on research and business news within the biotechnology arena.

Associate Professor Pfleger says;

As individuals and institutions, we are passionate about improving people’s health and wellbeing. Why, then, is it so hard to bridge the gap between the world-leading academic research that is so highly regarded by international peers, and tangible benefits for patients?”

International Award for CI Megan Munsie

The ARC CPTT is pleased to announce that one of our Chief Investigators,  Associate Professor Megan Munsie, was awarded a prestigious international award for her service to the stem cell community in ethics, engagement, policy and community service.

The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) has just announced this year’s recipient of the ISSCR Public Service Award for 2018. The ISSCR has said “Dr. Munsie is a stem cell scientist who has made a significant contribution for many years in outreach to the public and advocacy to policy makers around issues associated with stem cell science and its translation to the clinic.”

The award will be presented to Megan in Plenary II of the ISSCR meeting on Wednesday 20 June, 16:00-18:00.

A/ Prof Megan Munsie is the Head of Education, Ethics, Law & Community Awareness Unit, Stem Cells Australia and Deputy Director at the Centre for Stem Cell Systems, The University of Melbourne. She will be involved with a number of the ARC CPTT research projects run though the University of Melbourne node.
